Amon Amarth is a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in 1992 in Tumba. They are widely known for their lyrics and imagery centered on Viking mythology and history, earning them the frequent (though band-contested) label of "Viking metal". Their name is derived from the Sindarin name for Mount Doom in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth.
