Rage Against the Machine (often abbreviated as RATM) is a highly influential American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1991. They are pioneers of rap metal, famously fusing heavy metal riffs, punk energy, and funk grooves with fiercely political hip-hop vocals.

Band Status (2024–2026)
As of early 2024, the band has reportedly disbanded for the third time. Drummer Brad Wilk announced in January 2024 that the group "will not be touring or playing live again," effectively ending their "Public Service Announcement" reunion tour, which had been plagued by vocalist Zack de la Rocha's Achilles tendon injury.

Core Lineup
The band has maintained the same four members throughout its history:

  • Zack de la Rocha: Lead vocals (known for aggressive, rhyming delivery and activism).
  • Tom Morello: Guitar (famous for innovative "DJ scratching" sounds created with pedals and toggles).
  • Tim Commerford: Bass and backing vocals.
  • Brad Wilk: Drums and percussion.

Musical Style and Political Impact
RATM is defined by its anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist message. Their lyrics frequently address police brutality, systemic racism, and corporate greed.

  • Innovative Sound: Tom Morello’s guitar work often mimics a turntable, bridging the cultural gap between rock and hip-hop.
  • Activism: The band is known for high-profile protest stunts, such as shutting down the New York Stock Exchange during a video shoot and attempting to hang upside-down American flags on Saturday Night Live.

Essential Discography
The band released three studio albums of original material and one covers album, all achieving significant critical and commercial success:

  • Rage Against the Machine (1992): Their self-titled debut featuring "Killing in the Name" and "Bullet in the Head".
  • Evil Empire (1996): Debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200; includes "Bulls on Parade".
  • The Battle of Los Angeles (1999): Another #1 album, featuring "Guerrilla Radio" and "Sleep Now in the Fire".
  • Renegades (2000): A collection of covers by artists like Bob Dylan, Cypress Hill, and Bruce Springsteen.

Key Awards
  • Grammy Awards: Won Best Metal Performance for "Tire Me" (1997) and Best Hard Rock Performance for "Guerrilla Radio" (2001).
  • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Inducted in 2023.
