Slipknot’s self-titled debut, Slipknot, was released on 29 June 1999via Roadrunner Records. It is widely considered one of the most important and influential albums in the history of nu-metal and extreme music.
The "Classic" Era (1999–2000)
- Production: The album was produced by Ross Robinson (the "Godfather of Nu-Metal") at Indigo Ranch Studios in Malibu, California. It is famous for its raw, chaotic, and ultra-aggressive energy.
- The Lineup: This was the first album to feature the iconic "classic" nine-member lineup: (#0) Sid Wilson, (#1) Joey Jordison, (#2) Paul Gray, (#3) Chris Fehn, (#4) Jim Root, (#5) Craig Jones, (#6) Shawn "Clown" Crahan, (#7) Mick Thomson, and (#8) Corey Taylor.
- Commercial Success: It was the first album in Roadrunner Records' history to be certified Platinum.
Iconic Tracks
- "(sic)": The explosive opening track that set the tone for their live shows.
- "Wait and Bleed": Their first major radio hit, which earned them a Grammy nomination.
- "Spit It Out": Famous for the "Zero Bullshit" live tradition where the entire crowd crouches down and jumps up on command.
- "Surfacing": Adopted as the "new national anthem" by the band's dedicated fanbase, the Maggots.
The 25th Anniversary (2024–2026)
The band has been heavily focused on this debut recently:
- "Here Comes the Pain" Tour: Throughout 2024 and 2025, Slipknot performed a special anniversary tour where they played the 1999 debut album in its entirety, including rare tracks like "Scissors" and "Get This."
- Vintage Aesthetics: During this tour, the band returned to wearing original 1999-style masks and their classic red jumpsuits to honour their roots.
- 2024 Remaster: A 25th-anniversary vinyl reissue was released in late 2024, featuring updated artwork and rare demo tracks from the original sessions.
Trivia: The "Purity" Controversy
The original 1999 pressing of the album included the tracks "Frail Limb Nursery" and "Purity." Due to a legal dispute over the "Purity" story (which was based on a fictional internet crime story the band believed was real), the tracks were removed from subsequent pressings. They were later restored for the 10th-anniversary edition in 2009.
