The Police were a legendary English rock trio formed in London in 1977. They became one of the biggest bands in the world during the late 1970s and early 1980s by blending punk, reggae, and jazz into a sophisticated new wave sound.

Current Status (March 2026)
The band is currently disbanded and has not performed together as a full group since their massive 2007–2008 reunion tour. Recent news has focused on legacy projects and legal matters:

  • Royalties Dispute (2025–2026): In late 2025, Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland sued Sting for unpaid royalties related to streaming and downloads. Sting reportedly paid $800,000 in back royalties in early 2026, though his former bandmates claim they are owed millions.
  • 40th Anniversary Editions: The official website has been promoting "Super Deluxe" 40th-anniversary editions of their final album, Synchronicity.
  • Individual Projects:
    • Sting continues his highly successful solo career and frequently performs reimagined Police classics live.
    • Stewart Copeland recently released his Police Diaries and Police Deranged for Orchestra.
    • Andy Summers has been promoting his new photography and art series, A Series of Glances.
The Iconic Lineup
The band's definitive trio formed in August 1977:

  • Sting (Gordon Sumner): Lead vocals, bass guitar, and primary songwriter.
  • Stewart Copeland: Drums and percussion.
  • Andy Summers: Guitar and backing vocals.
  • Note: Founding member Henry Padovani served as the original guitarist for several months in 1977 before being replaced by Summers.

Essential Discography
The Police released five studio albums, all of which reached significant critical and commercial heights:
  1. Outlandos d'Amour (1978): Featured the breakout hit "Roxanne".
  2. Reggatta de Blanc (1979): Included "Message in a Bottle" and "Walking on the Moon".
  3. Zenyatta Mondatta (1980): Contained "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da".
  4. Ghost in the Machine (1981): Featured "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" and "Invisible Sun".
  5. Synchronicity (1983): Their final and most successful album, featuring the global #1 hit "Every Breath You Take".

Accolades & Legacy
The band has sold over 75 million records and won six Grammy Awards. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
