Van Halen was a legendary American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California, in 1972. Known for the revolutionary guitar work of Eddie Van Halen and their high-energy performances, they became one of the most successful rock acts in history, selling over 75 million albums worldwide.

The Iconic Lineups
The band is primarily defined by two major eras, each named after its lead singer:
  • The David Lee Roth Era (1974–1985, 2006–2020): The "classic" lineup featuring Eddie (guitar), Alex Van Halen (drums), Michael Anthony (bass), and Roth (vocals). This era is celebrated for its flamboyant, "party-rock" energy and groundbreaking albums like Van Halen and 1984.
  • The Sammy Hagar Era (1985–1996, 2003–2005): Often called "Van Hagar," this period saw a shift toward a more melodic, polished sound with more prominent use of keyboards. All four studio albums with Hagar reached #1 on the US charts.

Essential Albums & Songs
Van Halen released several multi-platinum albums that defined the hard rock landscape:
  • Van Halen (1978): Their debut featured the explosive guitar solo "Eruption", which introduced Eddie's two-handed tapping technique to the world.
  • 1984 (1984): Their most successful album, containing their only #1 hit, "Jump", along with classics like "Panama" and "Hot for Teacher".
  • 5150 (1986): The first album with Hagar, featuring hits like "Why Can't This Be Love" and "Dreams".
  • For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991): Featured the socially conscious anthem "Right Now".

Innovation and Legacy
Eddie Van Halen is widely regarded as one of the most influential guitarists of all time. His "Frankenstrat" guitar and technical innovations, such as pinch harmonics and tapping, revolutionized the instrument. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

The group officially disbanded following Eddie Van Halen's death in October 2020. In early 2026, his brother Alex Van Halen confirmed plans for a final project featuring unreleased recordings.
