Bathory was a highly influential Swedish extreme metal band formed in 1983 in Vällingby. Led by the multi-instrumentalist and primary songwriter Quorthon (Thomas Forsberg), the band is credited as a pioneer of both black metal and Viking metal.

• Viking Metal Era (1988–1991, 2002–2003): With Blood Fire Death (1988) and Hammerheart (1990), Quorthon transitioned to a slower, more epic style featuring choral arrangements and lyrics focused on Norse mythology, effectively creating the Viking metal subgenre.
