Key History and Controversies
Mayhem’s legacy is defined by several notorious events in the early 1990s:
- Death of "Dead": In 1991, vocalist Per Yngve Ohlin (known as "Dead") committed suicide. Guitarist Euronymous discovered the body and took photographs, one of which was later used as the cover for the bootleg album The Dawn of the Black Hearts.
- Murder of Euronymous: In 1993, founding guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth was murdered by former bassist Varg Vikernes (Count Grishnackh). This led to the band's temporary dissolution.
-
"De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas": Their debut full-length album was released in 1994, shortly after Euronymous's death, and is considered a definitive classic of the black metal genre.
