The Legacy is the debut studio album by the American thrash metal band Testament, released on April 21, 1987, via Megaforce and Atlantic Records. It is widely celebrated as one of the most influential debuts in the "second wave" of Bay Area thrash metal.
Band Name Change
The band was originally formed in 1983 under the name Legacy. Just before the album's release, they discovered that the name was already trademarked by another group—alternately described as an R&B, jazz, or hotel cover band. At the suggestion of Billy Milano (S.O.D./M.O.D.), they changed their name to Testament and used their original moniker as the album title.

Recent Remaster (2024)
In July 2024, Testament released a remastered version of The Legacy alongside their second album, The New Order. These reissues featured updated production and were released on various limited-edition vinyl formats.
Current Activity (2026)
The band remains highly active, recently releasing their 14th studio album, Para Bellum (2025). They are currently scheduled for a U.S. headlining tour in March and April 2026, with support from Destruction and Overkill.
