Slayer is an American thrash metal band formed in 1981in Huntington Park, California. As one of the "Big Four" of thrash metal—alongside Metallica, Megadeth, and Anthrax—they are credited with defining the genre's most extreme and aggressive sounds.

Founding and Early Years (1981–1985)
  • Formation: Guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman founded the band, later recruiting bassist/vocalist Tom Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo.
  • Early Sound: They began by playing covers of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden before developing their own darker, faster style.
  • Debut Success: Their first album, Show No Mercy (1983), was self-financed and gained significant underground popularity. This was followed by the influential EP Haunting the Chapel (1984) and the progressive Hell Awaits (1985).

The Def Jam Era and Peak Popularity (1986–1991)
  • Reign in Blood (1986): Produced by Rick Rubin, this album is considered a thrash metal masterpiece for its unprecedented speed and intensity. Despite controversy over the track "Angel of Death," it became their first gold-certified record.
  • Stylistic Shifts: They intentionally slowed their tempo for South of Heaven (1988) to explore a darker, more atmospheric sound before returning to high speeds with Seasons in the Abyss (1990).
  • The Clash of the Titans: During this era, they co-headlined one of metal's most famous tours alongside Megadeth and Anthrax.

Lineup Changes and Later Years (1992–2018)
  • Drummer Rotations: Dave Lombardo left and returned multiple times, with Paul Bostaph filling the role during his absences, notably on albums like Divine Intervention (1994) and God Hates Us All (2001).
  • Tragedy: In 2011, founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman contracted necrotizing fasciitis; he passed away from liver failure in 2013. Gary Holt (Exodus) joined as a permanent replacement.
  • Final Studio Album: The band released their 12th and final studio album, Repentless, in 2015.

Retirement and 2024 Reunion (2019–Present)
  • Farewell Tour: Slayer officially disbanded in November 2019 following an extensive 18-month global farewell tour.
  • Surprise Return: After nearly five years of retirement, the band reunited in 2024 for a series of high-profile festival appearances.
  • Current Status: They remain active for "sporadic reunion" shows through 2026, though members have stated there are currently no plans for new studio music.
