• Producer: It was the first of three albums produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who polished the band's raw sound into a more radio-friendly, high-definition style without losing its hard-hitting edge.
• Commercial Success: It was the first AC/DC album to break into the US Top 100, peaking at number 17 on the Billboard 200. It has since been certified 8x Platinum by the RIAA.
• The Title: The name was inspired by the band's grueling touring schedule, which Angus Young famously described as being on a "highway to hell".

The album's creation was nearly derailed by a fallout with the initial producer, Eddie Kramer. The band felt he didn't "get" their sound—reportedly even suggesting they add pianos—before they eventually paired with Mutt Lange. Lange's meticulous three-month recording process in London helped define the "stadium rock" sound that would later be perfected on Back in Black.
