Butchered at Birth is Cannibal Corpse's second studio album, released on July 1, 1991. This album marks a major step up in brutality, heaviness, and technicality compared to their debut, Eaten Back to Life. It features Chris Barnes’ even deeper, more guttural vocals, faster drumming, and some of the most graphic lyrics and cover art in death metal history.

Standout Tracks:

  • "Meathook Sodomy" – A chaotic, crushing opener with eerie intro effects
  • "Gutted" – One of their heaviest early tracks, filled with relentless riffing
  • "Living Dissection" – A technical showcase of fast, intricate guitar work
  • "Under the Rotted Flesh" – Slow, sinister, and pure death metal horror
  • "Covered with Sores" – A fan-favorite with catchy, groovy riffs
  • "Vomit the Soul" – A fast-paced, thrash-influenced banger
  • "Butchered at Birth" – The title track, delivering some of their most savage riffing
  • "Rancid Amputation" – A mix of groove and speed, one of the best on the album
  • "Innards Decay" – A crushing closer with a more structured, almost storytelling approach

Legacy & Impact:

This album pushed the limits of extreme metal, influencing countless brutal death metal and grindcore bands. Vincent Locke’s infamous album cover (depicting rotting corpses and mutilated infants) was banned in several countries, making Cannibal Corpse a symbol of controversy and underground brutality.

While Butchered at Birth retains some of the thrashy elements of their debut, it leans much more toward the brutal, slamming style they would fully embrace on Tomb of the Mutilated and The Bleeding.
