"The Trooper" is one of the most iconic songs by the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden, released on 20 June 1983. It was the second single from their fourth studio album, Piece of Mind. 

The song was written by bassist and founding member Steve Harris. It is based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava (1854) during the Crimean War. Harris was inspired by Lord Tennyson’s 1854 poem of the same name. Unlike the poem's heroic tone, the song takes the perspective of a dying cavalryman on the battlefield.
