Korn – Issues (1999) Album Overview

Release Date: November 16, 1999
Genre: Nu Metal / Alternative Metal
Label: Immortal Records / Epic Records
Producer: Brendan O'Brien

🧠 Background:

Issues is Korn's fourth studio album, released at the peak of the nu metal explosion. Following the commercial success of Follow the Leader (1998), Issues marked a darker, more emotionally charged shift in tone. It trades in the guest-heavy, hip-hop-infused style of its predecessor for a rawer, more introspective sound.

🎵 Tracklist Highlights:

  1. Dead – Short bagpipe intro; eerie and minimal.

  2. Falling Away from Me – One of the band's biggest hits; themes of abuse, depression, and internal conflict.

  3. Trash – Deals with emotional dependency and self-worth.

  4. Make Me Bad – Catchy, radio-friendly but still heavy; explores addiction and mental instability.

  5. Somebody Someone – A fan-favorite; raw, personal lyrics about rejection and needing help.

  6. Wake Up – Aggressive and direct, with themes of betrayal and confrontation.

(The full album contains 16 tracks.)

🎧 Sound & Themes:

  • The album is heavily layered with down-tuned guitars, rhythmic experimentation, and Jonathan Davis’s signature anguished vocals.

  • Lyrically, it’s one of Korn’s most personal albums, dealing with abuse, mental health, addiction, isolation, and emotional trauma.

  • Brendan O’Brien’s production made the sound more polished yet preserved the raw emotional core.

🖼️ Cover Art:

There were four different fan-created covers released, chosen through an MTV contest. The most iconic version features a ragdoll figure with stitched eyes, matching the album’s broken and haunted themes.

📈 Impact:

  • Debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, beating out Dr. Dre’s 2001.

  • Cemented Korn’s status as leaders of the nu metal genre.

  • Often considered by fans as one of Korn’s best and most emotionally resonant albums.
