Eaten Back to Life is Cannibal Corpse’s debut album, released on August 17, 1990. It’s one of the pioneering albums of death metal, delivering a brutal mix of thrash-influenced riffs, relentless blast beats, and Chris Barnes’ signature guttural growls. This record set the tone for Cannibal Corpse’s career with its graphic horror themes, violent lyrics, and raw aggression.
Standout Tracks:
- "Shredded Humans" – A brutal opener with a gruesome story and thrash-inspired riffs
- "Edible Autopsy" – Slow, creepy, and filled with sickening imagery
- "Put Them to Death" – Pure old-school death metal, short and savage
- "Scattered Remains, Splattered Brains" – A classic example of Cannibal’s early, raw energy
- "Born in a Casket" – One of their most recognizable early songs, dripping with horror vibes
- "Rotting Head" – Fast and aggressive with some of the best riffing on the album
- "A Skull Full of Maggots" – An early fan-favorite, full of chaotic, mosh-inducing madness
Legacy & Impact:
This album is more thrash-influenced compared to Cannibal Corpse’s later, more brutal and technical sound (Tomb of the Mutilated, The Bleeding). The raw production, violent lyrics, and fast-paced riffs made it a classic of early death metal, standing alongside albums from Death, Morbid Angel, and Obituary.
Fun fact: The album’s cover art, by Vincent Locke, set the precedent for Cannibal Corpse’s legendary history of banned and censored artwork.
