Repentless is the 12th and final studio album by American thrash metal icons Slayer, released on 11 September 2015. It marked a significant chapter as the band's first release following the death of founding guitarist Jeff Hanneman and the return of drummer Paul Bostaph.
Album Significance
- Final Statement: It remains the band's last full-length studio recording prior to their 2019 retirement and subsequent 2024 reunion for select festival dates.
- Production: Produced by Terry Date (Pantera, Soundgarden), the album moved away from long-time producer Rick Rubin to capture a rawer, more modern thrash sound.
- Chart Success: It was Slayer's highest-charting album in the US, debuting at #4 on the Billboard 200.
Key Tracks and Videos
- "Repentless": Written by Kerry King as a tribute to Jeff Hanneman. The music video, filmed at Sybil Brand Institute prison, became famous for its brutal, cinematic "prison riot" theme.
- "You Against You": Known for its high-speed technicality and another gore-filled music video directed by BJ McDonnell.
- "Pride in Prejudice": Completed the "Repentless" video trilogy, featuring actor Danny Trejo.
- "Piano Wire": The final song written by Jeff Hanneman to be featured on a Slayer album.
Personnel
- Tom Araya: Vocals and Bass.
- Kerry King: Guitars (wrote the majority of the album).
- Gary Holt: Guitars (joined in 2011 to replace Hanneman; contributed leads but did not write for the album).
- Paul Bostaph: Drums.
Current Context (2024–2026)
While Slayer officially retired in 2019, the Repentless era lineup (Araya, King, Holt, Bostaph) shocked the metal world by reuniting for several massive headlining performances in late 2024, including Riot Fest, Louder Than Life, and Aftershock.
