Rosenrot (German for "Rose-Red") is the fifth studio album by the German industrial metal band Rammstein, released on 28 October 2005. It is often considered a sister album to their previous release, Reise, Reise, as it features six songs originally written during those same recording sessions.
The Album: Rosenrot
The album was originally intended to be titled Reise, Reise Volume Two. Its cover art features the icebreaker USS Atka, an image previously used for the Japanese edition of Reise, Reise.
Key Tracks:
- "Benzin": The lead single, which translates to "gasoline".
- "Mann gegen Mann": A heavy track exploring themes of same-sex attraction and societal judgment.
- "Te Quiero Puta!": A unique track for the band featuring Spanish lyrics and mariachi-style horns.
-
"Stirb nicht vor mir (Don't Die Before I Do)": A duet with Sharleen Spiteri of the band Texas, notable for its rare use of English lyrics in a Rammstein song.
The Song: "Rosenrot"
The title track is heavily inspired by classical German literature, specifically Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's poem "Heidenröslein" and the Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Snow-White and Rose-Red".
- Lyrical Meaning: The song tells the story of a man who attempts to climb a dangerous mountain to retrieve a rose for his lover, only to fall to his death. It serves as a metaphor for the destructive nature of blind obsession or "simping" for someone who does not have your best interests at heart.
- Music Video: Filmed in Romania, it portrays the band as travelling monks. The plot follows a monk (Till Lindemann) who falls in love with a local girl. At her request, he murders her parents, only to be betrayed by her and burned at the stake by the villagers while his fellow monks engage in self-flagellation as penance.
