Soundgarden was a pioneering American rock band from Seattle.
Widely considered one of the "Big Four" of the grunge movement alongside Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains. Formed in 1984, they were the first grunge band to sign to a major label (A&M Records in 1988) and are defined by the late Chris Cornell's powerful four-octave vocal range and Kim Thayil's jagged, non-standard guitar tunings.
Recent Legacy and 2025–2026 Activity
Since the death of Chris Cornell in 2017, the band has primarily focused on preserving its legacy, though recent years have seen significant milestones:
- Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The surviving members—Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, and Ben Shepherd—reunited for the ceremony, joined by guest vocalists Taylor Momsen and Brandi Carlile.
- Final Studio Album Progress: As of early 2026, work continues on the band's final studio album featuring Cornell's last vocal recordings. Drummer Matt Cameron confirmed the project is "over halfway done" following the resolution of legal disputes with the Cornell estate in 2023.
- Kim Thayil's Memoir: Founding guitarist Kim Thayil is set to release his memoir, A Screaming Life: Into The Superunknown With Soundgarden And Beyond, on 19 May 2026.

Live Reunions: While no full tour is planned for 2026, the surviving members have occasionally performed together under the name Nudedragons (an anagram of Soundgarden), most recently for a benefit concert in Seattle in December 2024.
