The Exploited are a seminal Scottish punk rock band formed in Edinburgh in late 1978. They are widely considered one of the most influential acts of the "UK 82" second wave of British punk, known for their raw, aggressive sound and anti-authoritarian stance.

Musical Evolution and Style
The band's sound has evolved significantly over their four-decade career:
  • Early Years (1978–1986): Originally a street punk and Oi! band, they focused on high-speed, buzzy anthems. Their debut album, Punks Not Dead (1981), became a definitive statement for the genre, reaching #20 on the UK charts and #1 on the Independent charts.
  • Crossover Era (1987–Present): With the release of Death Before Dishonour in 1987, the band began incorporating crossover thrash and heavy metal elements into their music.

Key Members and Leadership
While the lineup has seen numerous changes, Wattie Buchan has remained the band's sole constant member, lead singer, and leader.

  • Current Lineup: Wattie Buchan (vocals), Irish Rob (bass), Wullie Buchan (drums), and Steve Campbell (guitar).
  • Wattie Buchan: Known for his iconic red mohawk and intense stage presence, Wattie has continued to lead the band despite significant health issues, including multiple heart attacks.

Notable Albums and Tracks
  • Punks Not Dead (1981): Their most famous album, asserting that the punk movement was still alive.
  • Troops of Tomorrow (1982): Their highest-charting studio album in the UK (#17).
  • The Massacre (1990): Solidified their transition into crossover thrash.
  • Beat the Bastards (1996): Known for its heavy, aggressive production.
  • Fuck the System (2003): Their most recent studio album to date.
  • Key Songs: "Army Life," "Dogs of War," "Dead Cities," "USA," and "Sex and Violence".

Legacy and Influence
The Exploited's aggressive style and "chaos" brand of punk influenced a wide range of bands, including thrash metal giants like Slayer and Metallica, as well as later punk acts like Rancid and The Casualties.

Current Activity
The band remains an active touring unit. As of early 2026, they have several scheduled performances in the UK and Europe, including the Scotland Calling festival in Edinburgh.
